Waxing at home: what to expect, how to prepare, and aftercare
Smooth arms and legs should not need a trip across town. Waxing at home with Beautyqueen covers the arms, legs, underarms and face in your own room, with fresh strips for every client. Clean, dry skin before the visit and gentle aftercare for a day or two make the biggest difference to how your skin feels.
Waxing is one of those jobs most women would rather fit into a quiet afternoon at home than plan a parlour trip around. This article, written by the Beautyqueen team, explains what usually happens during waxing at home, how to prepare your skin, and what to do and avoid afterwards.
What happens during waxing at home?
Waxing spreads warm wax over the hair, then lifts it away with a strip so the hair comes out from the root. Every beautician works in her own way, but the broad order is the same.
- The skin is checked for cuts, rashes or sunburn, which should not be waxed.
- The area is cleaned and dried, because wax holds better on clean, dry skin.
- Wax is spread in the direction the hair grows.
- A strip is pressed on and pulled off quickly, against the direction of growth.
- The skin is soothed and any left-over wax is wiped away.
Our beautician adapts each step to your skin. Her exact routine is her own craft, so this article describes the general steps of waxing, not her method.
Which areas can you get waxed at home?
We wax arms, legs, underarms and more, in your own home. We do not offer bikini or intimate waxing.
- Arms: full arms or half arms.
- Legs: full legs or half legs.
- Underarms.
- Face: for example the upper lip or chin, if you prefer wax to threading.
If you would like waxing with another service, such as threading or a cleanup, tell us when you book so we can plan the time.
How should you prepare your skin?
Come with clean, dry skin and hair that is not too short or too long. A few simple steps make waxing easier and more comfortable.
The American Academy of Dermatology explains how to prepare for waxing. Its advice includes:
- Hair about one-fourth to three-fourths of an inch long works best.
- Wash and dry the area first, so the wax can hold.
- Stop retinol and prescription retinoid creams on the face two to five days before facial waxing.
- Do not wax if you have taken isotretinoin in the last six months.
Tell us when you book if you have sensitive skin, an allergy, or a skin condition. If you are unsure whether waxing suits your skin, please ask a dermatologist first.
What should you keep ready at home?
Keep ready a chair or bed near good light and a plug point. That is all waxing at home needs from you.
At a Beautyqueen waxing visit, our beautician brings her own kit and opens fresh strips for every client. Please also keep:
- A comfortable place to sit or lie down, with good light.
- A plug point close by.
- Loose, comfortable clothes to change into afterwards.
- The area clean and dry, with no cream or oil on it.
Every visit follows the same hygiene habits: fresh towels, disposable spatulas and wax strips, and sanitised tools.
How should you look after your skin after waxing?
Keep the skin cool, loose and gently moisturised for a day or two. Freshly waxed skin is more sensitive, so treat it kindly.
The American Academy of Dermatology gives this aftercare advice:
- Use a cold pack if the skin feels sore.
- Avoid hot baths and hot showers for a while.
- Wear loose clothing over the waxed area.
- Use an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser.
- If redness or swelling lasts more than two days, see a board-certified dermatologist.
Also avoid strong sun, scrubs and perfumed products on the waxed skin for a short while. Waxing results can last a few weeks or longer, according to the Academy.
Is this your first time waxing?
A first wax can sting more than later ones, so plan a calm visit and start with a smaller area. Telling the beautician it is your first time helps her go at your pace.
- Start small, for example underarms or half arms, to see how your skin reacts.
- Choose a quiet day, not just before a function, in case your skin turns red for a few hours.
- Mention any allergy to wax, adhesive or creams when you book.
- Ask questions as you go; the beautician can pause between strips.
Our visits run from 12 PM to 6 PM, six days a week, and we are closed on Thursdays. Pick a slot when you are not in a hurry afterwards.

Waxing at home: Frequently Asked Questions
Is waxing at home effective?
Yes. Waxing removes hair from the root, whether it is done at home or at a parlour, and the American Academy of Dermatology says results can last a few weeks or longer. What matters most is skin that is clean and dry, hair of the right length, and a practised hand.
What should you not do after getting waxed?
For a day or two, avoid hot baths and hot showers, tight clothes, strong sun, scrubs and perfumed products on the waxed skin. If redness or swelling lasts more than two days, see a dermatologist.
What's the best thing to do after waxing?
Keep the skin cool and calm. A cold pack helps if it feels sore, loose clothing avoids rubbing, and an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser keeps the skin comfortable.
