Threading at home: eyebrows, upper lip and face

Eyebrow threading with a cotton thread, close-up

Brows have a habit of growing back right before a family function. Threading at home shapes the eyebrows and tidies the upper lip, chin and face with a twisted cotton thread, without you leaving home. The American Academy of Dermatology says results can last 4 to 5 weeks, and you can add threading to a facial or a cleanup in one visit.

Threading takes little time, yet the trip to a parlour for it can eat up half an evening. This article, written by the Beautyqueen team, explains what threading is, how to prepare, what to expect afterwards and how long it lasts.

What is threading, and how is it done?

Threading removes hair with a cotton thread twisted on itself and rolled over the skin. The twist catches short rows of hair and lifts them out from the root.

The Cleveland Clinic explains how eyebrow threading works and describes it as a kind of epilation used on the brows, upper lip, chin and jawline. The broad order is simple:

  1. The shape is agreed, so you and the beautician know how much hair to remove.
  2. The skin is held taut to make the threading smoother.
  3. The thread is rolled over small rows of hair, lifting them out.
  4. The shape is checked in a mirror and tidied.
  5. The skin is soothed after the threading.

Our beautician adapts each step to your face. Her exact routine is her own craft, so this article describes the general steps of threading, not her method.

Which areas can you get threaded at home?

We thread eyebrows, the upper lip and the face at home. Many women add it to a facial or a cleanup, so one visit covers both.

  • Eyebrows: shaping and tidying.
  • Upper lip.
  • Chin.
  • Forehead and the sides of the face.

Bring a photo if you want a particular brow shape, and tell us if you are growing your brows out, so nothing is removed that you wanted to keep.

Does threading hurt, and who should be careful?

Threading usually feels like a quick tugging, and many women find it gentler than waxing. Sensitive areas can sting for a moment.

The American Academy of Dermatology says threading causes little irritation, so it may suit sensitive skin. A few points still matter:

  • Stop retinol or retinoid creams on the area for a few days before threading; the Cleveland Clinic suggests five to seven days.
  • Do not thread over a cut, a rash, sunburn or a pimple.
  • Tell us about any allergy or sensitive skin when you book.
  • If you have a skin condition on your face, please ask a dermatologist first.

What should you keep ready at home?

Keep ready a chair near good light, and a clean face without heavy cream. Threading needs very little space.

At a Beautyqueen threading visit, our beautician brings her own kit and fresh towels, and agrees the shape with you before she starts. Please also keep:

  • A chair that lets you sit upright, facing good light.
  • A clean face, without heavy cream or make-up on the area.
  • A mirror nearby to check the shape.
  • A reference photo if you want a particular brow shape.

Every visit follows the same hygiene habits: fresh towels, sanitised tools, and disposables wherever a service needs them.

How should you care for your skin after threading?

Keep the area clean and avoid touching it for the rest of the day. Some redness is normal and usually settles within a few hours.

The Cleveland Clinic suggests these aftercare steps:

  • Avoid touching or rubbing the threaded area.
  • Skip make-up on the area for a little while if you can.
  • Avoid strong sun, and swimming pools, for a short while.
  • If redness, bumps or swelling do not settle, or you see signs of infection, see a dermatologist.

How long does threading last?

Threading results can last 4 to 5 weeks, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Many women book again every three to four weeks.

Hair grows at different speeds for different women, so you will soon learn your own rhythm. Booking a day ahead keeps your brows looking tidy without a rush.

Threading or waxing for facial hair?

Threading suits small, precise areas like the brows, while waxing covers larger areas faster. Many women use threading for the face and waxing for the arms and legs.

  • Precision: threading follows the brow line hair by hair, so shaping is easier to control.
  • Sensitive skin: threading touches only the hair and thread, with no warm wax on the skin.
  • Speed on large areas: waxing is quicker for arms, legs and underarms.
  • Your comfort: some women simply prefer one feeling over the other; try both and decide.

Threading at home: Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to do threading at home?

Yes. Threading needs only a cotton thread, good light and a steady, practised hand, so a beautician can do it in your own room. Beautyqueen threads eyebrows, the upper lip and the face at home.

What is the disadvantage of threading?

Threading can cause redness, irritation or mild swelling for a few hours, and sometimes small bumps or breakouts. In unpractised hands, brows can end up uneven. It also works best on small areas such as the brows and upper lip, not on large areas like the legs.

Does threading grow back thicker?

No. Threading pulls hair out from the root, so it does not make hair grow back thicker. The Cleveland Clinic notes that repeated threading can make brow hairs thinner and slower to grow back over time.

How long does an eyebrow thread last?

Threading results can last 4 to 5 weeks, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Many women come back every three to four weeks, depending on how fast their hair grows.
