Facial at home: what happens, step by step
A facial at home follows the same six steps as a good parlour facial: cleansing, a gentle scrub, steam, a face massage, a face pack and a moisturiser. With Beautyqueen it takes about an hour in your own room, and our beautician chooses the products only after a close look at your skin.
Before a wedding in the family, after a long week, or just because the skin feels tired: an hour-long facial is one of the services our clients ask about most. This article, written by the Beautyqueen team, walks through the usual steps of a facial, how long each service takes, what to keep ready and how to look after your skin afterwards.
What happens during a facial, step by step?
Most facials follow six broad steps, from cleansing to moisturising. Every beautician adapts them to the skin in front of her.
- Cleansing removes oil, sweat and make-up so the skin is ready for the next steps.
- A gentle scrub lifts away dead skin from the surface. It should never feel harsh.
- Steam warms and softens the skin for a few minutes.
- A face massage with a cream relaxes the face, neck and shoulders.
- A face pack is spread evenly and left on for a while, then removed.
- A moisturiser finishes the facial and leaves the skin comfortable.
Our beautician adapts each step to your skin. Her exact routine is her own craft, so this article describes the general steps that most facials share, not her method.
How long does a facial at home take?
A facial at home with Beautyqueen takes about 60 minutes. Shorter skin services fit into less time, which helps when you want something quick before an event.
| Service at home | About how long | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Facial | 60 minutes | The full set of steps, including massage and a face pack |
| Cleanup | 30 minutes | A shorter skin refresh: cleansing, scrub and a pack |
| D-Tan | 20 minutes | A sun-tan removal pack for the face, neck, arms or feet |
Our visits run from 12 PM to 6 PM, six days a week; we are closed on Thursdays. If you want a facial with another service, such as threading or a hair spa, tell us when you book so we can plan the time.
Which products are used, and for which skin?
The products depend on your skin, so our beautician looks at it and asks a few questions before she starts. Dry, oily, normal and sensitive skin each need a different touch.
At a Beautyqueen facial, our beautician brings her own kit and fresh towels, and chooses the products after a look at your skin. We use products from Lotus Professional, Astaberry, O3+ and Ozone. If you have sensitive skin or any allergy, please tell us when you book.
What should you keep ready at home?
Keep ready a place where you can sit back or lie down comfortably, near good light and a plug point. That is all a facial at home needs from you.
- A comfortable spot: a bed, a reclining chair or a sofa where you can lie back for an hour.
- Good light, so our beautician can see your skin clearly.
- A plug point close by.
- A clean face if you can manage it; if you are wearing make-up, that is fine too, as cleansing is the first step.
- Your hair tied back, or a hair band, to keep it away from the face.
Every visit follows the same hygiene habits: fresh towels, sanitised tools, and disposables wherever a service needs them.
Should you do a patch test first?
A patch test is wise if your skin is sensitive or if a product is new to you. It shows whether your skin reacts before a product goes on your whole face.
The American Academy of Dermatology explains how to test skin care products: apply a small amount to a quarter-sized spot, such as the inner arm or the bend of the elbow, twice a day for seven to 10 days. If you see redness, itching or swelling, wash it off and stop using it.
How should you care for your skin after a facial?
Keep the skin clean, gentle and protected from the sun for the next few days. A facial is care, not a treatment, so these simple habits help most.
- Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, using your fingertips, then pat dry. The American Academy of Dermatology lists these steps in its face washing tips.
- Do not scrub again for a few days; the facial already included a gentle scrub.
- Use sunscreen when you step out. The Academy recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, reapplied about every two hours outdoors.
- Moisturise if your skin feels dry.
A facial does not treat acne, pigmentation, rashes or any skin condition. For any skin problem, please see a dermatologist.

Facial at home: Frequently Asked Questions
What are the 5 basic steps of a facial?
The five basic steps are cleansing, a gentle scrub (exfoliation), a face massage, a face pack and a moisturiser. Many facials also add steam after the scrub. The products used at each step depend on your skin type.
What does a 1 hour facial include?
A one-hour facial usually includes cleansing, a gentle scrub, steam, a face massage, a face pack and a moisturiser, with time for the pack to stay on. A Beautyqueen facial at home takes about 60 minutes and covers these steps.
Is a salon facial good for skin?
A facial is a care treatment: it cleanses the skin, relaxes the face and leaves the skin feeling fresh. It is not a medical treatment, so it cannot fix acne or any skin condition. For those, please see a dermatologist. If your skin is sensitive, tell your beautician first.
