Cleanup at home: what it is, and cleanup or facial?

A beautician cleansing a client’s face

Only have half an hour but want fresh, clean skin? A cleanup at home is the quick option: cleansing, a soft scrub and a pack, done in about 30 minutes with Beautyqueen, half the time of a facial. Choose it for a short refresh, and keep the facial for the days you can spare a full hour.

“Do I need a cleanup or a facial?” is a question we hear almost every week. This article, written by the Beautyqueen team, explains what a cleanup includes, how it differs from a facial, how to prepare and how to look after your skin afterwards.

What happens during a cleanup?

A cleanup usually has three steps: cleansing, a gentle scrub and a face pack. It skips the longer massage and extra steps of a facial.

  1. Cleansing washes away the day’s dust, sweat and make-up.
  2. A soft scrub polishes the surface briefly; it should never sting or feel rough.
  3. Optional steam, for a couple of minutes, if your skin and the routine call for it.
  4. A pack rests on the face for a short while before it is wiped off.
  5. A light finish, usually a thin layer of moisturiser.

Our beautician adapts each step to your skin and chooses the products after a look at it. Her exact routine is her own craft, so this article describes the general steps of a cleanup, not her method.

Cleanup or facial: which one do you need?

Choose a cleanup for a quick refresh, and a facial when you have an hour and want the full care. Both start with clean skin and a gentle scrub.

What should you keep ready at home?

Half an hour, a reclining seat by a window or lamp, and a nearby socket are enough. Nothing else needs arranging.

At a Beautyqueen cleanup, our beautician brings her own kit and fresh towels, and chooses the products after a look at your skin. A short checklist:

  • Thirty free minutes, ideally not just before stepping into strong sunshine.
  • A sofa, bed or reclining chair where your head can rest back.
  • Daylight or a bright lamp close to your face.
  • An electrical socket within reach.
  • A clip or band holding your hair off the forehead.

Every visit follows the same hygiene habits: fresh towels, sanitised tools, and disposables wherever a service needs them. We use products from Lotus Professional, Astaberry, O3+ and Ozone.

Is a cleanup right for sensitive skin?

A gentle cleanup suits most skin types, but sensitive skin needs a lighter touch. Tell us about any allergy or reaction before the visit.

If a product is new to you, a patch test is wise. The American Academy of Dermatology explains how to test skin care products: apply a little to the inner arm or the bend of the elbow, twice a day for seven to 10 days, and stop if you see redness, itching or swelling.

A cleanup does not treat acne, pigmentation or any skin condition. For a skin problem, please see a dermatologist.

How should you care for your skin after a cleanup?

Keep the skin clean, moisturised and protected from the sun for the next day or two. Do not scrub again for a few days.

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests these simple habits in its face washing tips:

  • Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, using your fingertips.
  • Do not scrub; pat the face dry with a soft towel.
  • Moisturise if your skin feels dry.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher when you step out.

When is a cleanup the right choice?

A cleanup fits busy weeks, warm humid days and the gap between two facials. It is a short, practical refresh rather than a long pampering session.

  • Humid Kolkata days, when sweat, dust and oil build up quickly on the skin.
  • Before a small family function, when you have only half an hour to spare.
  • Between two facials, to keep skin feeling clean without a full session.
  • College students trying their first skin care service, with a gentle routine.
  • Working women who can manage thirty minutes but not a whole hour.

Our visits run from 12 PM to 6 PM, six days a week, and we are closed on Thursdays, so a quick cleanup slot is easy to fit around the school run or office hours.

What will a cleanup not do?

A cleanup refreshes the skin’s surface; it does not change skin colour, clear acne or remove marks. Knowing its limits keeps expectations honest.

  • No bleaching or lightening: every skin tone is beautiful, and a cleanup does not alter it.
  • No acne treatment: pimples, cysts and scars need a dermatologist.
  • No sun-tan removal: that is what a separate D-Tan pack is for.
  • No overnight miracle: skin changes slowly, with steady daily care.

Across seasons, many women find a lighter moisturiser comfortable in the sticky monsoon months and a richer cream better during dry winter weeks. Ask our beautician which texture suits you.

Cleanup at home: Frequently Asked Questions

How much gap between cleanup and facial?

There is no fixed rule. Both include a gentle scrub, so it is wise not to have them close together, and to let your skin settle in between. Tell us when you had your last cleanup or facial, and we will plan the gap for your skin.

Is face cleanup painful?

No. A cleanup is gentle: cleansing, a soft scrub and a face pack. If anything stings or feels uncomfortable, tell your beautician at once so she can stop or change the product.

Does cleanup remove tan?

A cleanup is meant to cleanse and refresh the skin, not to remove a sun tan. For a sun tan, a D-Tan pack is the service made for it, and daily sunscreen helps protect the skin from more sun.
