Haircut at home: straight, V, U, layer, butterfly and step cuts

A woman with a freshly cut, layered hairstyle

Layer cut or butterfly cut? That is the question most of our clients ask first. A haircut at home with Beautyqueen takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and our beautician does six cuts for women: straight, V, U, layer, butterfly and step. Keep a photo of the style you like ready on your phone.

A busy parlour on a Sunday, a long wait and a rushed trim are what many women would happily skip. This article, written by the Beautyqueen team, explains each cut we do at home, how the popular layer and butterfly cuts differ, what to keep ready and how to look after your new haircut.

Which haircuts can you get at home?

We do six haircuts for women at home: straight, V, U, layer, butterfly and step. Each one shapes the hair differently, especially at the back and around the face.

CutWhat it looks likeOften chosen for
Straight cutThe ends are cut to one even lineA neat, simple look that is easy to keep
V cutThe back is shaped to a point, like the letter VA sharper shape when the hair is left open
U cutThe back is shaped into a soft curve, like the letter UA softer, rounded shape at the back
Layer cutHair is cut to different lengths through the headMovement and lightness, without losing much length
Butterfly cutShorter layers around the face, longer layers belowA face-framing look while keeping length at the back
Step cutLayers cut in clear, visible stepsA defined, structured layered look

Our beautician looks at your hair before she starts and tells you honestly whether the cut you want will work with it.

Layer cut or butterfly cut: which one suits you?

Choose a layer cut for a softer, easy look, and a butterfly cut for more shape around the face. Both are the cuts our clients ask for most.

  • A layer cut spreads layers through the hair. It adds movement, keeps the look gentle and usually needs little styling.
  • A butterfly cut puts shorter layers near the face and keeps the lower layers long. It frames the face more boldly and often looks best with a little styling.
  • Hair thickness matters. Thick or medium hair usually holds a butterfly cut well; very fine hair may suit lighter layers better.
  • Your routine matters. If you prefer to wash and go, a layer cut is often easier to live with.

How long does a haircut at home take?

A haircut at home takes about 30 to 45 minutes. A straight trim sits at the shorter end, while layered cuts such as the butterfly or step cut take longer.

A simple straight cut is usually nearer 30 minutes, while a butterfly or step cut on long hair is nearer 45 minutes. Keep about 45 minutes free so the cut never feels rushed.

Our visits run from 12 PM to 6 PM, six days a week; we are closed on Thursdays. If you would like a haircut with another service, such as a hair spa or a facial, tell us when you book so we can plan the time.

What should you keep ready at home?

Keep ready a chair near good light and a plug point, and a photo of the style you like. At a Beautyqueen haircut, our beautician arrives with her own kit and sanitised tools, and asks to see your reference photo before she starts.

  • A chair that lets you sit straight, near good light.
  • A plug point close by.
  • A photo of the cut you like, on your phone.
  • A spot where cut hair can be swept up easily afterwards.
  • Your questions about the length you want to keep, so nothing is cut that you wanted to save.

Every visit follows the same hygiene habits: fresh towels, sanitised tools, and disposables wherever a service needs them.

How should you care for your new haircut?

Gentle washing and less heat help a new cut keep its shape for longer. Small daily habits matter more than any product.

The American Academy of Dermatology lists hair care habits that can damage your hair. Its advice, together with its tips for healthy hair, includes:

  • Shampoo the scalp, not the full length of the hair.
  • Use conditioner after every wash.
  • Blot wet hair with a towel instead of rubbing it.
  • Avoid brushing hair while it is wet; use a wide-tooth comb from the ends instead.
  • Keep blow-dryers, hot combs and curling irons to a minimum, on low or medium heat.
  • Avoid pulling hair back tightly in ponytails or buns every day.

If you notice hair fall or any scalp problem, a haircut will not help; please see a dermatologist.

Haircut at home: Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, butterfly or layer cut?

Neither is better for everyone. A layer cut gives a softer look and is easy to manage, while a butterfly cut frames the face more and usually needs a little styling. Your hair thickness and how much time you spend on your hair decide which suits you.

Which face shape is best for butterfly cut?

Stylists often suggest a butterfly cut for oval, round and heart-shaped faces, because the shorter front layers frame the face. Face shape is only one part of the choice, though: your hair thickness and texture matter just as much. Our beautician will tell you honestly whether it suits you.

Who should not get a butterfly cut?

A butterfly cut may not suit very fine or thin hair, as heavy layering can make it look flatter. It may also not suit someone who wants a no-styling routine or prefers one even length. In those cases a light layer cut or a straight cut is often a better fit.

Which haircut is better for curly hair, a V cut or a U cut?

A U cut is often the easier choice for curly hair, because its soft curve keeps more fullness at the back. A V cut gives a sharper point that shows best on straighter hair. Our beautician will look at your curls before suggesting one.
