Hair spa at home: what happens, how long it takes, and aftercare
Can a proper hair spa happen in your own bedroom, without a parlour chair or a steamer? It can. A hair spa at home with Beautyqueen covers a scalp and head massage, a conditioning cream, warmth, a rinse and drying, in about 60 minutes for medium-length hair or about 90 minutes for long hair. Please wash your hair before our beautician arrives.
Dry ends, a stressful month or simply wanting an hour for yourself: these are the reasons women in Lake Town, Bangur, Baguiati and New Town book a hair spa with us. This article, written by the Beautyqueen team, explains what usually happens during a hair spa, how long it takes, what to keep ready and how to look after your hair afterwards.
What happens during a hair spa?
A hair spa is a care session for the scalp and the length of the hair. Every beautician has her own way of doing it, but most hair spas follow the same broad order:
- A scalp and head massage with a hair-spa cream, worked from the roots towards the ends.
- A conditioning cream or mask spread through the length of the hair, section by section.
- Warmth, from a steamer or a warm towel wrapped around the head, while the cream stays on.
- A rinse with water to remove the cream.
- Drying, by gently blotting with a towel and then drying the hair.
Our beautician adapts each step to your hair. Her exact routine, and Beautyqueen’s special spa, are her own craft, so this article describes the general steps that most hair spas share, not her method.
L’Oréal hair spa or Beautyqueen’s special spa?
We offer two kinds of hair spa at home:
- A L’Oréal hair spa, made with L’Oréal Professionnel hair-spa products. L’Oréal Professionnel describes its Hair Spa range as professional products, with creambaths chosen for different hair needs.
- Beautyqueen’s special spa, our own hair-spa routine. The recipe stays with our beautician.
Not sure which one to choose? Tell us your hair type and length on WhatsApp, and we will suggest one before you book.
How long does a hair spa at home take?
Hair length decides most of the time, because longer hair takes longer to cover, rinse and dry.
| Your hair | Time to set aside |
|---|---|
| Medium-length hair | About 60 minutes |
| Long hair (longer than medium length) | About 90 minutes |
Our visits run from 12 PM to 6 PM, six days a week; we are closed on Thursdays. If you would like a hair spa with another service, such as a facial, tell us when you book so we can plan the time.
What should you keep ready at home?
Keep ready freshly washed hair, a washbasin nearby and a chair near a plug point. At a Beautyqueen hair spa, our beautician arrives with her own kit and fresh towels, and starts on hair that you washed before she came.
Here is the short list:
- Freshly washed hair. Wash it yourself before our beautician reaches your home.
- A bathroom or washbasin nearby for the rinse.
- A chair near good light and a plug point.
- About an hour, or an hour and a half for long hair, without needing to rush out.
Every visit follows the same hygiene habits: fresh towels, sanitised tools, and disposables wherever a service needs them.
Is a hair spa at home right for your hair?
A hair spa suits most women who want time to care for their hair without travelling. It is especially useful if your hair feels dry, rough or hard to manage after sun, travel or heat styling.
A few points help you decide:
- Dry or curly hair often enjoys a conditioning cream through its full length.
- Fine or straight hair usually needs a lighter touch, with the cream kept more on the lengths and ends.
- A recently treated scalp, or one that is sore, cut or very itchy, should wait. Please tell us about it when you book.
- Busy weeks are easier with a home visit, because there is no travel or waiting at a parlour.
If you have any allergy or a sensitive scalp, mention it on WhatsApp before the visit, so we can plan the products with you.
How should you care for your hair after a hair spa?
Gentle washing, regular conditioner and less heat styling help most after a hair spa. A hair spa is care, not a cure, so the days after it matter as much as the session.
The American Academy of Dermatology gives this everyday advice in its tips for healthy hair:
- Use conditioner after every wash: on the ends for fine or straight hair, and through the whole length for dry or curly hair.
- Shampoo the scalp rather than the full length of the hair.
- Blot wet hair gently with a towel instead of rubbing it.
- Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair, starting at the ends.
- Keep blow-drying and flat or curling irons to a minimum, on low or medium heat.
A hair spa does not treat hair fall, dandruff or any scalp condition. If you notice hair fall, a scaly or itchy scalp, or anything unusual, please see a dermatologist. The American Academy of Dermatology also explains how dandruff is treated, which is a job for proper care, not a spa session.

Hair spa at home: Frequently Asked Questions
What is done in a L’Oréal hair spa?
A L’Oréal hair spa follows the usual hair-spa steps using L’Oréal Professionnel hair-spa products: the cream is massaged into the scalp and worked through the hair, left on with some warmth, then rinsed out, and the hair is dried. L’Oréal Professionnel offers several creambaths in its Hair Spa range for different hair needs.
Can we do a hair spa without steam?
Yes. Steam is used to add warmth while the cream is on the hair, and a warm towel wrapped around the head is a common way to do the same at home. Our beautician brings what she needs for this step.
Can I apply oil before a hair spa?
Some people oil their hair before a hair spa. For a hair spa with Beautyqueen, please wash your hair before our beautician arrives. If you usually oil your hair, tell us when you book and we will advise you.
How many days does a L’Oréal hair spa last?
There is no fixed number of days. How long your hair stays comfortable depends on your hair type, how often you wash it and how much heat you use on it. L’Oréal Professionnel suggests a hair spa every few weeks for many people.
